A-Z Online Style Guide

For the most part, The Fletcher School website follows punctuation, capitalization and usage guidelines outlined in the Associated Press Stylebook Online, which is available to the entire Fletcher community through the Ginn Library (password required).

Fletcher-specific style guidelines are included in the A-Z guide below.

TEACHING ASSISTANT, TEACHING FELLOW – Lowercase; generally preferred rather than TA or TF, even on second reference.

TEAM – Do not capitalize team: football team, basketball team, etc.

TELEPHONE NUMBERS – Complete telephone numbers should be provided in any written copy. Copy for external distribution (new releases, etc.) should always include the area code and seven digit number separated by periods: 555.555.5555 .

TIME – Use figures: 10 a.m. ; 4:30 p.m., except for noon and midnight. For noon and midnight use the words noon and midnight, do not add a 12 in front of them. Omit the :00 following the hour and do not use“o’clock.”

When indicating a span of time, use a hyphen, if not using prepositions. If using “from” use “to” instead of a hyphen: The lecture will run 6-8 p.m. The question and answer with the professor will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The meeting will be Tuesday, January 12, 2-3 p.m.

T-SHIRT – Hyphenate and capitalize the T.

TWEET – Lowercase; describes the act of sending a message on the social network Twitter (to tweet) as well as the message that is sent (a tweet)

TWITTER – Uppercase; describes the community-based message distribution system. A social networking site that allows users to post thoughts in 140 characters per message: The Fletcher School encourages students and faculty to widen their social media footprint on platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
