A-Z Online Style Guide

For the most part, The Fletcher School website follows punctuation, capitalization and usage guidelines outlined in the Associated Press Stylebook Online, which is available to the entire Fletcher community through the Ginn Library (password required).

Fletcher-specific style guidelines are included in the A-Z guide below.

SCHOOLS – Capitalize the full names of Tufts’ 11 schools and colleges; The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy; second reference – The Fletcher School/Fletcher/the School.

 

SEASONS – Do not capitalize winter, spring, summer, fall, unless it is part of a formal name: Winter Olympics. Do not capitalize seasons as part of an academic period: spring semester, winter break.

 

SEMESTER – Lowercase.

 

SIGN-UP (n. and adj.) sign up (v.)

 

SMARTPHONE – Lowercase, an advanced cell phone that allows for email, Web browsing and downloadable applications.

 

STATES – Spell out names of states when they stand alone in a sentence. When using a city and state in a sentence, set off the state with commas: The Fletcher School is located in Meford, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston.

Abbreviating state names – use the following abbreviations when they are used with a city: Ala. Ariz. Ark. Calif. Colo. Conn. Del. Fla. Ga. Ill. Kan. Ky. La. Md. Mass. Mich. Minn. Miss. Mo. Mont. Neb. Nev. N.H. N.J. N.M. N.Y. N.C. N.D. Okla. Ore. Pa. R.I. S.C S.D Tenn. Vt. Va. Wash. W.Va. Wis. Wyo. Do not abbreviate these names in running text: Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Texas, and Utah.

 

STATEWIDE – One word, no hyphen.

 

STREET – Use abbreviation only with numbered address; Office of Communications, Public Relations and Marketing, 132 Curtis St., Somerville 02155.
