Why I chose Fletcher: The joint degree program between The Fletcher School and The Friedman School of Nutrition's sustainable agriculture program at Tufts really stood out as unique when I was looking for graduate school programs. I wanted to gain technical knowledge about agriculture within the broader economic context of smallholder farmers in less developed countries. I looked at programs in development, business, and agricultural economics, but none of them compared to the joint degree between Fletcher and Friedman. These programs combine technical knowledge in agricultural and nutrition science, policy classes targeted at food and agricultural, classes in international economics and development, and business skills classes in areas like finance, marketing and operations. This was exactly what I was looking for to prepare me for a career in private-sector agriculture, doing the actual work of connecting smallholder farmers with world markets.

What class did you take that you never expected you would? When I began at Fletcher, I was planning to continue to work in the non-profit international development industry. Then, through my coursework and internship experiences over the three years of my joint degree program, I solidified my decision to work towards social and economic development through the private sector. Though I was a MALD rather than a MIB student, I took full advantage of Fletcher's wonderful curriculum in international business. I did not expect when I began at Fletcher that I would come to consider myself a business student, or take courses in marketing and business strategy, but these were the courses that I both enjoyed the most, and where I learned tools and ideas I had not learned while studying development economics.
