Richard Opio, 2011, Uganda

Why I chose Fletcher: From northern Uganda, a land of war and misery and yet full of hope, I contemplated how best we can build a lasting peace. Something more peaceful than just the silence of guns; peace that embraces development and respect of human dignity. I looked for a school that would not only guide me on the art of resolving conflicts or diplomatic processes, but a school that would also groom me into a true leader. A leader needs to see things holistically and globally, and to be a global citizen in outlook and attitude. I knew Fletcher would help me become just that. I fell in love with its interdisciplinary program, faculty, and community. It is my first time outside Africa, but at Fletcher, I found another home away from home.

On the Fletcher academic experience: The Fletcher academic experience is rigorous and can be tough, but also fun and enjoyable. The faculty have been very helpful in their office hours in clarifying hard concepts. My fellow students were also a great asset to me. Their diverse personal experiences, knowledge and skills helped decode many complex theoretical concepts. I left Fletcher with both theoretical and practical skills that I'll live with for the rest of my life.
