On choosing Fletcher: When I applied to graduate school, I had already decided to apply for a dual-degree in international relations and business. This is because I felt that an MBA will equip me with the basic skills to run an organization, whether it be a non-profit or business, while the MALD will help me to answer questions about the most pressing social development issues and the theories to addressing them. Unlike many other schools, the flexibility of Fletcher's curriculum allows me to customize my studies and choose which classes I need to take in the three short semesters on top of my MBA.  Prior to my studies, I have worked in disaster relief for four years (in Japan and in Nepal) with Habitat for Humanity and interned with the UNHCR for half a year. Having worked in a shelter with Habitat for a few years, I felt that I needed to put my work into perspective in order to understand the broader view of humanitarian and development issues. Fletcher, with its professional and academic reputation in both areas, as well as its balance with the MBA program, was the clear choice for me.

On the classroom experience: I feel that one of the best things that Fletcher has to offer is the faculty and classmates. In any class you take, you either have a renowned researcher with multiple ongoing research projects (many are looking for research assistants!) or an ultra-experienced practitioner who knows a lot about the issues that they are teaching first hand. My classmates usually also have some significant experience in various fields, so if there is a specific topic I wish to know more about, I will try asking around or posting a message in Fletcher’s social listserv to try and learn a little more about it.
