Why Fletcher? Fletcher was not originally on my radar when I first decided to resume my studies. It was when I began researching the best-ranked schools in the US that I first heard about The Fletcher School. As I moved forward with my plan to pursue a Master’s degree in international relations, I quickly came to realize that Fletcher was the best school for people like me who, after a number of years in the field, decide to embark on a career change in their professional life. The diversity of the school, not only in terms of the number of nationalities represented, but also the wide age range of its students and their different backgrounds, convinced me to choose Fletcher. The excellent reputation of the Career Services department and the role of the alumni in supporting the students after graduation were also important factors in deciding to come to Fletcher. Finally, to be absolutely sure that The Fletcher School was the right place for me, I made the journey from Dar es Salaam to Boston in order to visit the school and the city a year in advance. This visit removed any doubts that I might have had, reassuring me that Fletcher was the right place for me at this time in my life and career, both for the next two years and beyond.

On the Office of Career Services:  I never thought that after less than a month at Fletcher, I would have already used the resources of Career Services, but this is exactly what happened. Less than three weeks after the start of the semester, Career Services secured free tickets to attend the 2017 Concordia Annual Summit in New York for me and a number of Fletcher students. Taking part in this event gave me the opportunity to interact with world leaders such as former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Tony Blair and former First Lady of the United States Laura Bush. This conference also represented an opportunity to meet and network with professionals in the fields of international relations and aid development in order to secure an internship and explore future job opportunities. The required Professional Development Program class for first-year students during the fall semester has allowed me to present my strengths and skills to future employers in the best manner possible. Throughout the semester, we have worked on resume and cover letter writing, creating an effective elevator pitch, and interviewing techniques. It was great to have the chance to use these skills at a conference so early on in my time at Fletcher.
