U.S. Army Major - Ft. Lewis, WA

On selecting Fletcher:
I selected The Fletcher School because it would give me a broad understanding of the world and the nations within it. As an Army Officer, I was very focused in my previous career on micro level issues, and I wanted to gain a better understanding of the context and need for the military operations in which I was involved. The Fletcher School was recommended to me by several mentors and people I respected as an institution that would help develop and deepen my understanding of the world to make me a better leader. Following graduation, I hope to command a United States Army Special Forces Company, and put my lessons from the MA curriculum to work. The flexibility of the program lets me study the military, terrorism, and strategy from a broad perspective that serves as a good foundation of knowledge. In addition to the coursework itself, much of the learning at Fletcher comes from interacting with Fletcher's internationally diverse student body, which truly brings our learning material to life. The opportunities for interaction with people of different perspectives and backgrounds was something I knew would be valuable, but could not appreciate until I came here and actually experienced it.

How Fletcher has broadened my global perspective: I am taking a class right now that is a joint class with students from the Moscow Institute of International Relations. We use video-teleconferencing technology to conduct the class in real-time with classmates that are an ocean and continent away. Taking this class has really broadened my global perspective because the interaction comes at a time when US-Russian diplomatic relations are strained. Despite that, within this class we are able to discuss and debate issues affecting US-Russian relations. We can better understand the perspective of each other, freed of the constraints diplomats or government officials have because they are bound to represent a 'national position'. As a class we are committed to understanding those political constraints and seek ways overcome them. It really has made me optimistic that there are people who want the world to work better and has allowed me to understand the challenges that these people face.
