Why I chose Fletcher: The opportunity to engage in passionate and thought-provoking discussion that targets current international conflicts and issues brought me to Fletcher. At the open house event, I saw a simulation where Dean Bosworth participated as the president of the United States during a National Security Council meeting, and each student was assigned a different role as the Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, and so on. The main theme of the simulation was the hypothetical collapse of the North Korean regime, an area in which the Dean specialized for a long time. As a journalist covering Japanese politics, I had previously met Dean Bosworth at the Prime Minister’s office in Tokyo where he was the United States Special Representative for North Korea policy. Seeing the Dean again, this time in a simulation with students, emphasized that on top of its impressive international reputation, its diversity, and its wealth of knowledge, Fletcher is first and foremost a place where students and faculty practice academic understanding.

A favorite Fletcher moment:

“This is off the record,” the man from the Department of Defense seriously announced at the beginning of his intriguing speech. It was a special lecture outside of the classroom. His topics ranged from diplomatic and military differences between Russia and China to U.S. missile defense, and true concerns about North Korean security issues. He presented his genuine opinion of international affairs and international security which enabled me to better understand what high-level U.S. government officials were thinking. This is not a rare occurrence, as Fletcher provides a wealth of excellent opportunities to meet and discuss ongoing international affairs with active U.S. diplomats and defense officials.
