Why I chose Fletcher: Choosing Fletcher was a simple decision that did not require much thought. My main priority was to find a program that would allow me to broaden my horizons rather than one that would restrict me to a single subject of concentration. I was searching for a program that would provide me with all the necessary tools and skills which would allow me to return to my country with the confidence to make a difference. Though international relations is a program found in numerous universities around the world, none of the other universities I considered had Fletcher's unique multi-disciplinary approach to education. The diverse student body, coupled with professors who have more than just an academic understanding of global subjects, convinced me of Fletcher's superiority in creating a 21st century education. Having graduated with a bachelor's degree in international relations, I knew that I wanted an international career, but I was unsure of which field to concentrate (the Middle East, Development Economics, or International Business). Fletcher’s extremely flexible curriculum was the only place where I could tailor my degree to get exactly what I wanted.
How I plan to use my experience at Fletcher to make a difference in the world: Coming from a country that has been devastated by economic, political, and social challenges, I hope to acquire the skills that will enable me to start a career in the field of development. Yemen has recently become an important player in the international arena due to the presence of Al-Qaeda. However, I believe that it is economic development and not security buildup that will lead to the stability necessary to eradicate Al-Qaeda and other challenges. Developing countries like Yemen are in need of students who choose to study abroad. It is for this reason I find it crucial that I find a career, whether from within or from the outside, that is connected to Yemen's development.
