Shahla Al Kli, 2016, Kurdistan Region - Iraq

On Fletcher and my interests: I strongly believe that Fletcher is the right school for me and for my doctoral research. I am a Kurdish woman from Kurdistan region-Iraq, and Fletcher celebrates diversity. My research topic involves a range of subjects that draw upon literature of diaspora, transnationalism, identity politics, identity-based conflicts, comparative politics, and conflict resolution, and Fletcher celebrates taking a multidisciplinary approach to the study of international relations. I want to work on transnational communities in the Middle East, a force of conflict and peace. Fletcher supports and provides opportunities to those who want to achieve academic excellence, and develops well-rounded thinkers who can find practical solutions to critical, real-world  problems.

On the MALD to PhD:  During my MALD, My experience at Fletcher was unique and life-altering in that it was the first time in my formal education that I experienced multidisciplinary approaches to the critical issues relating to the Middle East. It was for the first time in my life that I experienced interacting with students from different countries as well as ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Fletcher’s multidisciplinary approach and diversity gave meaning to the term “global education” for me.
