Juan Taborda, Colombia

On the PhD program: The research question I wish to address during my doctoral studies is how to better understand development within a country and how comprehending this concept will affect public policy outcomes. I believe that understanding this process can provide alternatives to start tackling the problem of poverty traps that explain inequality within countries. The Ph.D. program at Fletcher fits my research interests and meets my professional expectations, and  it allows me to examine a particular research question from a multidisciplinary perspective. I will have a unique opportunity as a researcher to refer to different methodological and conceptual approaches, which is necessary to analyze a complex issue like the one I am interested in, while keeping a practice-oriented focus.

On the diversity of the community: One of the characteristics that attracted me most to Fletcher was the diversity of its community. I knew I was going to face classrooms with students and professors of multiple backgrounds. I knew that this diversity was going to be instrumental in widening my perspective and understanding the world. However, even being aware of how diverse Fletcher was going to be, I was happy to see that it was even more diverse that I could have ever imagine! The Fletcher student body is a tapestry of skills and backgrounds that range from experienced military officers, former high-level public servants, private consultants, and former NGO activists from all over the world. This mega diversity that goes beyond countries and ethnic backgrounds is what makes Fletcher a unique learning experience which mirrors the complex environment students will face once they leave graduate school.
