Google's Eric Schmidt and Jared Cohen on "The New Digital Age" at The Fletcher School

In February 2014, Google's Eric Schmidt and Jared Cohen visited The Fletcher School to discuss their book, "The New Digital Age: Transforming Nations, Businesses and Our Lives." The event was part of the Hitachi Center Speaker Series and was moderated by Bhaskar Chakravorti, Senior Associate Dean of International Business and Finance.

Their discussion emphasized the opportunities and challenges surrounding mobile technology as a tool for political change. Following the talk, Schmidt and Cohen took wide-ranging questions from students in the audience.

Dean Stavridis Interviews: Connie Schneider, Fletcher Women's Leadership Award Winner

In March 2014, Cornelia Schneider (MALD '06) was awarded the first annual Fletcher Women's Leadership Award. James Stavridis, Dean of The Fletcher School, sat down with Connie to chat about her career as a lawyer and humanitarian.

In the video, Connie discusses her current work in Goma, DRC, for the UN Development Programme's Access to Justice Project supporting rule of law efforts; her prior work in Afghanistan with EUPOL and the School of Leadership Afghanistan; and her path to Fletcher.

Dean Stavridis Interviews: Interpreter for 4 Iranian Presidents, Banafsheh Keynoush

Fresh from the 2013 United Nations General Assembly in New York, interpreter Dr. Banafsheh Keynoush (Fletcher MALD ‘99 and PhD ‘07) sat down with Admiral James Stavridis, Dean of The Fletcher School, for a discussion about what he calls "a wonderful part of the business of diplomacy."

In the video, Dr. Keynoush describes her journey as a young professional woman in Iran, her path to Fletcher, the delicate art of interpreting both words and culture, the current mood in Iran, and her experiences interpreting for four powerful Iranian presidents: Akbar Rafsanjani, Mohammad Khatami, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and current president Hassan Rouhani.

The Ideas Industry Conference: Is Social and Online Media the Answer?

 On April 29, 2014, The Fletcher School hosted a daylong series of panel discussions exploring the changing state of academics in the marketplace of ideas. The conference, titled “The Ideas Industry: Is the Academy Needed or Wanted?” brought together multidisciplinary perspectives, including renowned academics, journalists and public intellectuals.

Daniel Drezner, professor of international politics at the Fletcher School, chaired “Panel IV: Is Social and Online Media the Answer?” During the panel, participants examined the impact of new media on academics’ ability to write for a wider audience.

SXSW 2014: "Open Source" Foreign Policy in the Digital Age

In March 2014, the Fletcher School organized a panel at the SXSW Interactive Festival in Austin, TX. The panel brought together multidisciplinary experts with experience from NATO, USAID and the US Department of State to examine the opportunities and challenges of "Open Source" problem solving in this turbulent 21st century.

Moderated by Spencer Ackerman, US National Security Editor at The Guardian, panelists asked how governments, NGOs, and international business leaders are leveraging social and digital tools to build partnerships across boundaries, cultures, disciplines, and sectors.

Lecture: President Ilves of Estonia "What Keeps Me Awake at Night?"

In September 2013, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves of the Republic of Estonia visited the Fletcher School to deliver a lecture titled "What Keeps Me Awake at Night? Worries and Challenges for a Small European Ally.” Addressing a crowd of Tufts community members and distinguished guests, the president commented on cyber security, modern transatlantic relations, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

An internationally recognized expert in cyber and information technology, President Ilves has made Estonia a model for e-governance, winning praise in the areas of education, e-health, Internet freedom and cyber security.

USAID's Dr. Rajiv Shah at Fletcher Class Day 2014: Naive optimism is exactly what we need

At the Fletcher School 2014 Class Day Ceremony, Dr. Rajiv Shah, Administrator of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), delivered a commencement address emphasizing the value of naïve optimism.

Dr. Shah’s speech drew on his own experience at the Gates Foundation, where such naive optimism led them to take on major challenges such as universal immunization and to succeed where others had dismissed even the possibility of success. His advice to the Class of 2014? When told you're naive, smile, listen, then go do what you are determined to do with dedication and passion.

Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger: European Security and Defense, What's Next?

In April 2014, the Honorable Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger of Germany returned to his alma mater for a discussion entitled, "European Security and Defense—What's Next?" Following his remarks—part of the Charles Francis Adams Lecture series—the ambassador answered questions from students and faculty. 

Ambassador Ischinger graduated from Fletcher in 1973 and went on to a distinguished career in the German Foreign Service. Two weeks after Ambassador Ischinger's presentation at Fletcher, the Operation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) appointed him as its negotiator on Ukraine.

Security Expert, Peter W. Singer Talks Cyber Warfare

Director of the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence at the Brookings Institution Peter Singer spoke at The Fletcher School about the evolving threat of cyber warfare and how business and government leaders need to rethink their security strategies.
