Arria Formula Meeting on Children and Armed Conflict

On Monday, 9 July 2012, German Ambassador Peter Wittig and French Ambassador Gérard Araud jointly hosted an "Arria Formula" meeting of Security Council members on "Children and Armed Conflict".

The purpose of the meeting was to exchange views with states, civil society and UN organisations on how to add pressure on so-called "persistent perpetrators", i.e. parties to conflict who continuously commit violations of children's rights and have therefore been listed in the Secretary Generals Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflict for five or more years.

Briefers were Ms Radhika Coomaraswamy, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Children and Armed Conflict; Ms Cecile Aptel Professor at Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University and Ms Bijaya Sainju, PPCC, an NGO-network from Nepal involved in the monitoring of grave violations on children in armed conflict.
