The entire Fletcher School community is deeply saddened by the recent loss of Professor Alan Wachman, who passed away on June 21, 2012 after a courageous yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer. A scholar and a teacher of international affairs, and a 1984 Fletcher graduate, Professor Wachman’s contributions to and impact on the community ran both wide and deep.
“Alan was a superb teacher, an accomplished scholar, and a thoughtful and active contributor to The Fletcher School community. He cared deeply and passionately about The Fletcher School,” said Dean Stephen W. Bosworth in his written remarks to the School’s community on Friday. “Alan’s impact on the School was substantial and his influence over students extensive. His presence among us will be dearly and sorely missed.”
As associate professor of international politics at Fletcher, Alan Wachman’s research focused on Chinese foreign relations, Sino-US relations, Taiwan, and cross-Taiwan Strait Relations. In 2008, he published an article in the journal China Security entitled, “Ensnared by Beijing: Washington Succumbs to the PRC’s Diplomacy of Panic.” His research on security issues in East Asia over the past several years culminated in a book titled “Why Taiwan? Geostrategic Rationales for China’s Territorial Integrity” (Stanford University Press, 2007). Professor Wachman was a fellow in the “Program on Peace, Governance, and Development in East Asia” (2008-2009) as a guest lecturer at the East Asia Institute (Seoul), Keio University (Tokyo), and Peking University (Beijing). He was a member of the editorial board of Asia Policy, China Security, and Issues and Studies: A Social Science Quarterly on China, Taiwan, and East Asian Affairs.
A memorial service celebrating Alan’s life will be held at the School later in the year.
A fund to support Fletcher students engaged in international non-profit work has been established in Professor Wachman’s memory and reflects his fundamental belief in the importance of making the world a better place.
