Until recently, he was US President Barack Obama's special envoy to North Korea. Celebrated career diplomat and Dean, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, Stephen W Bosworth was in India recently, to attend a symposium on “The Indian Ocean: Politics, Security and Global Business”. [The symposium was hosted by The Fletcher School, and featured panelists including Dr. Shashi Tharoor (F76, F77, F79), Member of Indian Parliament and Admiral Sushil Kumar, Former Indian Navy Chief.]
"We have seen a slow but steady growth in the number of students from India... as India becomes increasingly important in a global sense, it is ever more important to have strong connections with the country," says Bosworth, who is on the governing board of the Indian School of Business thanks to a tie-up the Hyderabad-based institute has with The Fletcher School for setting up a public policy institute.
... Bosworth, who trains his students in conflict management and negotiation techniques , says most conflicts in the world cannot be solved, but can only be managed. As regards India-Pakistan hostilities , he says the two countries must use all the possibilities to manage the problem. "It is hard to envision now after all these years of tension and conflict how the India-Pakistan problem could be resolved, but I think there has been some progress in managing the problem."
