Professor Henrikson Delivers the Annual Ernst Sucharipa Memorial Lecture at the Diplomatische Akademie in Vienna

Professor Alan Henrikson, Director of Diplomatic Studies at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, who currently holds the Fulbright Schuman Chair in US-EU Relations at the College of Europe in Bruges, Belgium, delivered the annual Ernst Sucharipa Memorial Lecture at the Diplomatische Akademie in Vienna on 4 May 2011 discussing the topic, “TALKING TO BAD GUYS–GOOD RESULTS? Assessing the Diplomacy of Engagement”. He considered the problem of “engaging with” authoritarian leaders, including the present-day leadership of Iran and North Korea, in comparative historical perspective, from the time of the Munich conference (1938). Previously, during 2 and 3 May, he spoke on “The Importance of Public Diplomacy for Small Countries” at the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and also in the Round Table, “Public Diplomacy, Nation Branding and Image”, sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Hanns Seidel Stiftung at the Ilirska Dvorana in Zagreb. He also was interviewed by local media concerning the popular uprisings in the Arab world, the death of Osama bin Laden, the continuing NATO military operations in Libya, and Croatia’s negotiations with the European Union concerning EU accession.
