Maki Nakata, 2013, Japan

Managing Director & Co-Founder, maki & mpho - Boston, MA
I am launching a lifestyle brand for African inspired designs with a textile/fabric designer. My role involves strategic planning and business development.

What I learned at Fletcher: As an entrepreneur, my daily activity is basically about problem-solving.  Business ideas are developed by identifying problems, understanding the context of the problems, selecting core insights, and coming up with potential solutions.  At Fletcher, I learned about embracing the diverse community, navigating richness and complexity of the multi-disciplinary approach, and understanding complex issues in the context of globalization.  These experiences always motivate me to solve a complex problem and help me make better decisions for my venture.

My favorite Fletcher class: My favorite class at Fletcher was Political Economy and Business of the EU, taught by Professor Jacque.  While my academic and professional focus has not much relevance with the EU, I think the class was filled with a condensed unique Fletcher aspect.  It was all about excitement and complexity found in the intersections of political economy and business, and it was also about social, cultural, and historical aspects that make the EU issues more complex.  I attended classes that are offered in both French and English, which added another unique element to my learning.
