Why I chose Fletcher: I’m in the MIB program, so of course traditional business schools were part of my graduate school search. I’ve always been very interested in learning about business: the complex issues involved in running one, the extent to which business interests do or should play a role in policy decisions, ways to make businesses more positive places to pursue careers and strengthen communities. Fletcher was the one school I visited where these issues seemed to be given full weight. Also, I know this sounds really nerdy, but the fact that every two year degree student at Fletcher writes a thesis really appealed to me. It sent the message that Fletcher is not only a serious professional school, but also academically very serious. I remember one visit as a prospective student to a prominent MBA program where an enrolled student told me that her coursework was only the 3rd or 4th priority on her list of things to do each day. At Fletcher, career planning, networking, and extra-curricular activities are a large part of what I spend my time doing, but academics are never undermined by these activities.

How I first learned about Fletcher: I was in a graduate-school rut. I knew I wanted to go back to school to study business, but felt uninspired by the MBA programs I had come across. Was there a way to study business without getting an MBA? If there was, I hadn’t found it. One day I was venting all of this to one of my oldest friends, then a MALD student, and she suggested the MIB program. I obviously knew about Fletcher because of my friend, but until then, I did not know it could be a place for me too. I signed up for a MIB Visit Day and verified that everything she said was true. From there I made the decision to apply. What a great friend I have!
