On Professional Development: Fletcher is one of the leading international affairs schools in the world with a very close-knit community, strong alumni network, and long tradition in educating global leaders. I heard from many people in my field about Fletcher’s excellence and global perspective with grassroots understanding. Working on the Sustainable Development Goals negotiation and international development issues for the past three years provided me with a general picture of the nexus of social equality, environmental sustainability, and economic growth to foster prosperity and eradicate hunger. But I felt that I needed something more; some aspect was missing. I needed to learn from the best, particularly on the central issue of security – specifically, in my case, human security. I realized that human development is the key to growth, but human security is, in turn, essential to effective human development. Fletcher offers me an opportunity to study and learn from individuals with different expertise and backgrounds, as well as help me widen my perspective and enrich my learning. Fletcher’s MALD program gives me the ability to tailor my courses to my goals, and ultimately convert my passion into a profession. I feel that I belong to this community and am honored to be part of its long tradition!

How did you learn about Fletcher? I was born and raised on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. Every day of my youth I witnessed the unending struggle to escape the life of poverty that characterized my surroundings. I came to believe a good education is the key, and all young people need to have the opportunities to get a good education and participate in the development of their community, passing on those benefits to the next generation. This is when I decided to work for the betterment of my generation and the generations to follow. This is also the first time I learned about Fletcher. On one occasion, I met with a Fletcher alumnus that was working in the Foreign Embassy in Jakarta. At that time, I told him that I planned to continue my studies and look for a good school with a flexible curriculum. I was told to take a look at Fletcher, and find out if Fletcher suited my passion. I was totally impressed with Fletcher from that time and immediately made Fletcher my priority.
