Anubhav Gupta, 2013, United States

Assistant Director, Asia Society Policy Institute - New York, NY

How did your Fletcher experience prepare you for your current job? My regional focus on South and Southwest Asia while at Fletcher provided me the knowledge and policy insight that is necessary for this position. I also learned a lot about international negotiations, diplomacy, and conflict resolution through various courses and simulations at Fletcher. Having both a functional and regional focus definitely helped me.

On relationships with faculty at Fletcher: Its really important to find mentors at Fletcher. I was lucky to have three specific professors in my corner. Professor Ayesha Jalal, Ian Johnstone, and Richard Shultz provided me sage guidance while I was at Fletcher and helped me land on my feet once I graduated. I will continue to solicit their counsel as my career progresses.

On Career Services: I did not have direct professional experience in the international affairs field before coming to Fletcher, and I was fairly apprehensive about the process and prospect of finding a job after graduation. My experience with the Office of Career Services and the Professional Development Program
thus far was a relief. OCS staff members are helpful and supportive, but also honest. They prepare you by helping you to understand the full spectrum of your options and then crystallizing what actually is a good fit. But they are also helpful in identifying what your weaknesses are and pushing you to set goals and make decisions. For the first time in my academic/professional career, I felt that I had some credible guidance to help me move in the right direction.
