On selecting Fletcher: When I first started applying for graduate school, I thought I wanted to do a PhD in sociology because I was interested in the role women play in security. Specifically, I was interested in two areas: the integration of women into ground combat roles, especially elite special operations units, and how empowering women can help contribute to a region's stability.  But the more research I did, the more I realized that very few schools had sociology programs that studied anything military-related.  As one of my friends put it, many in academia are still a little wary of the military.  Fletcher was like a breath of fresh air.  I like that my interests fit well at Fletcher, but not because they happen to fall into a narrow range of topics that Fletcher professors care about, but rather that Fletcher embraces a multi-disciplinary approach and goes out of its way to encourage its students to have wide-ranging interests.

How I learned about Fletcher: I used to work at the US Air Force Special Operations School, where we spend a lot of time trying to convince our students that non-kinetic actions are often much more powerful than raw military might.  In one of our courses, the instructor uses a video of then-Admiral Stavridis talking about his experience in Latin American and the importance of soft power. When I started researching graduate schools and found out that he was the Dean at Fletcher, I knew it would be a great place to be.
