Grant Bridgman, 2016, South Africa, United States

On teamwork: The culture of collaboration and the achievements of the students and faculty I see working together made the most distinct first impression on me. Within my first month at the school, a group of second years had joined me in putting together a spontaneous and distinguished panel of experts to discuss the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. The support and positive response that our team received from Admiral Stavridis, Fletcher’s Dean, as well as senior faculty at the School, really encouraged me. The culture of helping one another beyond standard expectations puts Fletcher students at a serious advantage, and gives students the freedom to dream up and execute exciting projects, and the opportunity to build strong professional relationships with peers and faculty.

Campus life: I live on campus in Fletcher’s very own student house, Blakeley Hall. There are over eighty students in Blakeley Hall, and over forty nationalities. For me, moving into Blakeley was the perfect introduction to Fletcher’s truly international education, and it has been a great way to get to know the diverse and remarkable stories of my classmates. Conversations about any corner of the world become more exciting when you include someone with firsthand experience. Conversations about the war in Syria are enriched when friends from Iran and the Levant are there, as does talking about India’s new prime minister with a diverse group of Indians. Playing cricket in the quad with the same group of Indians is a lot of fun too.
