On the MALD: Before coming to Fletcher I had the opportunity to work across all three sectors of government, business and nonprofit. These vastly different experiences, from working with the UN in Iraq to an investment bank in New York City, taught me the importance of having skills that are easily transferable across sectors and job descriptions. I chose Fletcher because the curriculum and community is built for just that. The broad curriculum of the Masters in Law and Diplomacy program equips students with tangible skills that all the sectors demand of its leaders, and it has successfully placed leaders in organizations all over the world.

Favorite Class: My favorite class at Fletcher is Processes of International Negotiation. Every class includes a one-on-one mock negotiation that pushes your knowledge of mediation, communication and conflict resolution. You negotiate with (or against) classmates who are seasoned negotiators, former military leaders or diplomats. Professors who are themselves leaders in the negotiation community guide discussions and help bring the theory of textbooks to life.

Quintessential Fletcher Moment: All of my favorite Fletcher moments have inevitably involved discussions with my classmates and friends. During one particular evening I found myself in my apartment with friends continuing a debate on Syria that began earlier in the day at a Fletcher event. The debate wound through international law, foreign policy, philosophy and humanitarian action. It drew upon our previous experiences, from medicine to sales to humanitarian action, and it pushed each of us – one American, one Venezuelan and one Dutchman – to understand the issues from different perspectives.
