Maria Rita Manzano Borba, 2015, Brazil

Why Fletcher: I chose Fletcher for several reasons. I have always wanted to have the opportunity to study or work abroad. Also, I wanted to specialize in conflict resolution related to environmental issues, and Fletcher allows me to take a multi-disciplinary approach to studying the relationship between society and nature. When heard about Professor Moomaw's Sustainable Development Diplomacy course, I was fascinated and wanted to learn more and explore the possibilities for improving my personal knowledge and skills through Fletcher’s coursework related to the environment.

On the classroom experience:  It is so difficult to choose a favorite class because they are so complementary, and that is what I love about Fletcher. As I'm pursuing the International Environment and Resource Policy and Conflict Resolution and Negotiation fields, I find that Theory of Conflict Resolution (Prof. Babbitt) and  Sustainable Development Diplomacy (Prof. Moomaw) have greatly enriched my understanding of the issues on which I would like to focus on in my career. At the same time, the Development Aid in Practice course (Prof. Wilkinson) provides me with practical knowledge and allows me apply the theories I am learning about to situations on the ground.
