Why I chose Fletcher: When I was applying for graduate school, I was looking to change careers from the non-profit to the private sector, to focus on international communications and marketing, and to cultivate a strong understanding of the positive social impact of my studies and my future career. Not many programs have the resources nor the flexibility to allow students to merge all of those interests, but the Fletcher School does. Fletcher not only encourages you to chart your own path with your own interests, but it also provides the resources that enable you to do so by offering a diverse and flexible curriculum. Additionally, if there isn't a class offered in my area of interest, then I have the option to cross-register for courses at any of the other local schools, including Harvard and MIT. Fletcher also provides a curriculum that equips me with the theoretical and practical skills necessary to bring me closer toward realizing my own professional goals. Not to mention the school attracts students looking to make a social impact through their studies and long-term career goals, which also means an inviting and warm peer atmosphere, inspiring faculty, and an all-star alumni network.

How do you plan to use your experience at Fletcher to make a difference in the world? I plan to use my experience at Fletcher to make a difference in the world of corporate social responsibility. Through my involvement with the Hitachi Center, and student groups such as Net Impact for Socially Responsible Business, I hope to consult ICT businesses on best practices for ensuring user privacy and safety, as well as the human security implications of rolling out their products into new markets. As communication technology leads the charge of globalization in many countries, I want to be able to help these multinational companies do self-assessments, evaluate their policies, and become better corporate citizens. In addition to taking several courses in communication, technology, business ethics, and environmental sustainability, I will heavily consult my professors (of which there are many in the CSR field) on ways to achieve my goal in charting a corporate social responsibility career path.
