Why I chose Fletcher: Fletcher was always one of my top choices because of the caliber and rigor of its academic program. Upon visiting Fletcher, it also became clear to me that Fletcher was by far the best school out there in terms of providing guidance to students with career planning and their job search after graduation. The staff and faculty I met at seemed engaged and invested in their students' futures, which was really important to me. Still, picking graduate programs was a fairly difficult and nerve racking process. In the end, my decision was made easier by the fact that Fletcher offers generous financial support. I was going to grad school so that I could embark on a career in public service. The financial support that Fletcher offers to students while they are here, and after graduation through the LRAP program, was a key draw for me.
On Career Services: I do not have direct professional experience in the international affairs field. Therefore, even before coming to Fletcher, I was fairly apprehensive about the process and prospect of finding a job after graduation. My experience thus far has been a relief. The Office of Career Services and the Professional Development Program have already been a useful resource. OCS staff members are helpful and supportive, but also honest. They prepare you by helping you to understand the full spectrum of your options and then crystallizing what actually is a good fit. But they are also helpful in identifying what your weaknesses are and pushing you to set goals and make decisions. For the first time in my academic/professional career, I feel that I have some credible guidance to help me move in the right direction. The job search still seems daunting. But, I know that Fletcher is going to help me be as prepared as I can be when I graduate.
