On the classroom experience: My favorite class has to be the Processes of International Negotiation with Professor Salacuse. It is an intense and enthralling class that puts you in the hot seat. The lectures are informative but the simulations are what make it worth taking. Interacting with classmates and trying to reach an accord in a various situations makes you appreciate the science and art behind negotiation. I have found myself sometimes walking away from class (at times frustrated) appreciating the discipline that goes into such a field. The readings are relevant and add to the class dialogue and dynamics in a way that leaves me looking forward to the next meeting.
Something that has surprised me about Fletcher: One of the many things that surprised me about Fletcher was the varied experience of the student body. It always amazes me when I’m talking with someone who has a depth of experience in a field I only marginally know about. This sentiment holds especially true for those who work for non-governmental organizations and their level of dedication involved in their work. I have worked within the confines of governmental organizations and felt as though my role was already defined, but classmates who have worked for NGOs display a level of guile and resourcefulness I can only dream about. Their stories of having to navigate between the public and private sectors to secure funding/resources are an amazing display of leadership in action.
