Deborshi Barat is a lawyer from India, having completed his 5-year integrated B.A.LLB (Hons.) from the National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata. He is registered with the Delhi Bar Council. At present, he is enrolled at the Fletcher School for the M.A. in Law & Diplomacy (MALD) and LL.M. dual degree program.
After his graduation, Deborshi worked for over two years in the New Delhi offices of S&R Associates, a boutique law firm, specializing in Capital Markets and Corporate Law. Thereafter, he practised as an independent advocate at the Calcutta High Court, advising private and corporate clients in Property, Company Law and Criminal matters. After joining Fletcher in 2013, he has worked as a Supervising Lawyer with Femin Ijtihad, a human rights advocacy group.
Apart from law, Deborshi is interested in debating, theatre and writing. He has represented his school and university in various national and international debates, also having participated in a moot court competition in Poland (MICC) in 2014 as part of a Fletcher team. He has been a director on the Board of Theatrecian, a major theatre group in India, and has acted in several plays, mega-serials and feature films. Last year, his debut novel, The Hunter of Pigeons, a work of fiction, was published as a Penguin-Random House collaboration.
In 2012, Deborshi was awarded the TOEFL Scholarship, conferred by ETS to students worldwide; he was the recipient of the highest scholarship from India. At Fletcher, Deborshi secured the William L. Blue and Joan R. Blue Scholarship in 2013, and the Alfred P. Rubin Prize (awarded to the outstanding student of International Law at The Fletcher School) in 2014.
