Deborah Winslow Nutter

Senior Associate Dean, Professor of Practice
Director of GMAP

Deborah Winslow Nutter is the Senior Associate Dean and a Professor of Practice of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy of Tufts University. She is also the founding director of GMAP. As Senior Associate Dean, she is responsible for Fletcher’s Board of Overseers and regional advisory groups for Asia, Latin America, Europe, South Asia and Africa; GMAP; The Tavitian Scholars Diplomatic Training Program, the Fletcher Summer Institute on Non-Violent Conflict, communications and public relations; several strategic initiatives; and diplomatic and executive education.  

 Dr. Nutter teaches foreign policy leadership and team dynamics in GMAP. She also lectures and writes on the intersection of geopolitics and global leadership, using major historic world leaders and the challenges they faced as a basis for evaluating leadership performance and success.

 Dean Nutter earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University, where she held several fellowships, including an Honorary Presidential Fellowship.  She holds her A.B., Phi Beta Kappa, from Colby College, earning the F. Harold Dubord Prize for the top Government major, and studied at Oxford University.  Prior to coming to Fletcher, she taught international politics, security studies, Soviet and Russian foreign policy, and international organizations and law at Bowdoin and Simmons Colleges, serving as Chair of the Department of Political Science and International Affairs at the latter institution and leading its internationalization effort.  Dr. Nutter has been a Fellow at Harvard University at both the Center for International Affairs and the Center for Science and International Affairs and spent one year as an American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow. She also serves on the Board of Regents of the Portsmouth Abbey School.

 Dean Nutter’s research interests focus on how historic and current leaders confront changing geopolitical situations, a well as their relations with key advisers, including spouses.  Her publications include Soviet Foreign Policy in Transition with Cambridge University Press, and journal and newspaper articles on security studies, transatlantic relations, international political leadership, and India’s role in world affairs.

Monica Markowski

Admissions Assistant

As GMAP Admissions Assistant, Monica Markowski responds to inquiries into the program and supports the application process. He also organizes advertising and marketing initiatives for GMAP, supporting the Assistant Director of Admissions and Marketing. Additionally, Tom liaises with the Registrar’s Office on foreign language examinations for GMAP students, as well as visa issues for international students.


Daniel Hurwit

Technology Assistant, GMAP and Executive Education

As Technology Assistant, Daniel Hurwit is responsible for developing courseware, curating the learning management system, and providing technical support to the students, staff, and  faculty of GMAP. Daniel received his BS in Physics from Tufts University.

Nicole Sanderson

Manager of Technology, GMAP and Executive Education

As the Manager of Technology, GMAP and Executive Education, Nicole Sanderson is responsible for the online communications platform, courseware development, training, and other program technology needs.  Nicole received her BA in History at Wellesley College, and her MA in Learning, Design and Technology at Stanford University.

Mariana Stoyancheva

Associate Director

As Associate Director, Mariana Stoyancheva is responsible for academic programs.  She plans and oversees the residencies and counsels students on academic issues and concerns. She also coordinates with GMAP faculty on syllabi, materials and deadlines. Mariana graduated from Fletcher’s Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy Program in 2005, and holds a law degree from Sofia University Law School in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Ati Waldman

Student Services Assistant

As Student Services Assistant, Ati Waldman works with the Associate Director to plan residencies on campus and abroad. She also assists with program academics by supporting students and collaborating with the GMAP faculty and technology staff to coordinate course materials. Ati received her BA from Tufts University in International Relations concentrating on the Middle East.
