Students admitted to the MALD, MA, or MIB programs may request a one-year deferral. (MALD and MIB students also have the option of a one semeseter deferral.) Deferrals are typically granted for a variety of compelling reasons such as unique employment opportunities, special fellowship programs, approved joint degree programs, or family or medical emergencies. The granting of deferrals beyond one year is extremely rare.
Deferral requests must be submitted in writing to the Director of Admissions at The Fletcher School. Deferral requests should be made before your enrollment deposit deadline (In general, April 20 for Fall enrollment or November 30 for Spring enrollment). Deferral requests after those dates will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
If a deferral is granted, students must submit a $500 non-refundable matriculation deposit in addition to a $2,000 non-refundable deferral deposit. The total deposit is $2,500 and is applied to the first semester’s tuition. In cases of either insufficient funding or uncertainty of future plans it is advisable to decline the offer of admission and reapply at a later date when circumstances may be more certain or stable. Please note: If you have been awarded a Fletcher scholarship and a deferral is granted, the scholarship award will not roll over to the next academic year with the deferral. Your request for scholarship aid will be reconsidered during the following year’s admissions cycle. You will be required to submit a new scholarship application with updated information.
