Jamie Williamson heads the International Committee of the Red Cross’ Unit for relations with arms carriers, including military, security forces and armed groups.  He oversees a team of about 50 experts, operating in all of today's conflict zones, seeking to maximize compliance with the law of armed conflict. An expert in international humanitarian law, he previously served as the ICRC legal adviser for the US and Canada (based in Washington D.C.) and for Southern Africa, Eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean (based in South Africa), before joining the ICRC’s headquarters in Geneva as the legal adviser for all common law countries.  While based in D.C. ( 2008 – 2011), his work focused on the US and Canadian’s military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and on detention issues, including in Guantanamo. In all these positions, he has worked with senior government and military officials on the ratification and implementation processes of different international treaties, including weapons' treaties, and on criminal repression for war crimes.

Before joining the ICRC, from 1996 until 2005, Jamie Williamson worked for several of the United Nations’ international courts.  He was a legal adviser to the international criminal tribunals for Yugoslavia and for Rwanda, and for the Special Court for Sierra Leone, and contributed to some of the major jurisprudential developments defining genocide and war crimes.
