5:30 PM – 7:00 PM
Fletcher alumnus (1981) and founder of GLIFAA (Gays and Lesbians in Foreign Affairs Agencies) is returning to Fletcher to share the story of his life, career, and historic role in ending LGBT+ discrimination in the Foreign Service. Jan, the last US diplomat fired for being gay, went on a decade long legal battle, up to the supreme court, to end the exclusion of LGBT+ people from the diplomatic corps. Jan only re-entered the State Department under the Clinton Administration in 1992. Born in Czechoslovakia, and originally a political refugee to the U.S., Jan will also share what it meant for him to serve in the US Foreign Service, and talk about his experience at Fletcher.
