Can we trust the present state of the digital infrastructure to keep our personal or business data secure against cyber-attacks? Or that the evolving developments in the digital infrastructure (e.g. Internet of Things, self-driving cars, automated services, 3D printed products) will also keep our personal or business data secure? Can we trust the larger-than-life personalities whose reputations are so tightly associated with their products and brands — e.g. Cook, Zuckerberg, Page-Brin, Bezos, Kalanick, etc. – and believe that they will make decisions that are in our best interest? These are some of the questions to be explored in this interactive and engaging talk on digital trust.
Bhaskar Chakravorti is the author of the newly released 2017 edition of the biennial Digital Planet report, “How Competitiveness and Trust Vary in Digital Economies around the World,” including an updated Digital Evolution Index and a seminal study on the state of “Digital Trust,” in collaboration with Mastercard. The report and the accompanying article by the authors in the Harvard Business Review have since been capturing the attention of governments, global investors, and businesses around the world. This research builds on the earlier Digital Planet Report/ Digital Evolution Index research in 2014/’15 which sparked policy debates and deliberations around the world and established the importance of digital competitiveness to countries.
