Description

Born and raised in the mountains of northern Pakistan, Jonathan Addleton has served as U.S. ambassador to Mongolia, USAID representative to the European Union in Brussels, and USAID mission director in India, Pakistan, Cambodia, Mongolia, and Central Asia. In June 2014 he received the American Foreign Service Association’s Christian A. Herter Award for intellectual courage and constructive dissent. He has written four books including Mongolia and the United States: A Diplomatic History (Hong Kong University Press, 2013), Some Far and Distant Place (University of Georgia Press, 1997), and Undermining the Center: The Gulf Migration and Pakistan (Oxford University Press, 1992). His latest book The Dust of Kandahar: A Diplomat Among Warriors in Afghanistan was published by Navel Institute Press in November 2016. Jonathan received his PhD and MA from The Fletcher School. A career Foreign Service officer, he has been married for 30 years and has three adult children.
