    Memories of Algeria’s Struggle for Freedom

    Guest speaker Zohra Drif will discuss her memoir "Inside the Battle of Algiers." Ms. Drif fought in the War of Independence (1954-1962) in the ranks of the FLN in Algiers. She was a member of the Council of the Nation (the upper House of the Algerian Parliament) from 2001 to 2016 and its Vice President from 2003 to 2016.

    Tisch College Distinguished Speaker Series: Ambassador Daniel Shapiro

    Join us for an engaging conversation with Ambassador Daniel Shapiro about foreign policy, American diplomacy in the Middle East and public service. Appointed by President Barack Obama in 2011, Daniel Shapiro served as the United States Ambassador to Israel until January 2017. As Ambassador, Shapiro won praise from leaders of both countries for his deft management of the U.S.-Israel relationship during Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations, the Iran nuclear agreement, regional instability, and periods of significant bilateral tension and disagreement. Prior to serving as Ambassador, Shapiro's career spans over 20 years in senior foreign policy and national security positions in the United States government, including as the Senior Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the National Security Council.

    Segal Lecture: Dr. Atul Gawande

    Dr. Atul Gawande will present the Segal Lecture/Tufts University School of Medicine Common Book Talk on "Being Mortal". The book explores the ways that contemporary society and modern medicine deal with aging and dying. Through patient stories, research, and his own father’s illness, Dr. Gawande shares models of elder and hospice care that enable patients to lead fulfilling and rich lives even at the very end. He challenges us to rethink the ways we provide care to the aging and infirm. He compares the US model to international health care systems, with some eye-opening conclusions. Dr. Gawande will be on Tufts Boston campus for the lecture on Friday, September 15. The event will be live streamed to The Fletcher School for viewing in Medford.

    CSS Inaugural Research Seminar and Open House

    At the Open House, Professor Monica Toft will introduce the Center, its fellows and activities, as well as present our first seminar on “A Positive Future for US Foreign Policy and Strategy." The CSS Research and Policy Seminar will be a regular forum for Fletcher and visiting scholars to present unpublished policy-relevant scholarship on strategy, international politics, and US foreign policy. In accordance with the CSS mission statement, we are looking to present “cutting-edge scholarly analysis that broadens the U.S. foreign policy debate, exploring alternative strategies.”

    Fletcher LEADs: Playing and Negotiating to Our Strengths

    Playing and Negotiating to Our Strengths is designed to help Fletcher students: • Investigate gender research, leadership studies and lived experiences for both pros and cons of leaning on feminine qualities of a leader.  • Practice transformational leadership skills such as eliciting respect and pride, communicating effectively and problem solving in flexible, creative ways  • Gain confidence and skill by learning the vocabulary and strategies of collaborative, interest-based negotiation that are applicable to work and life situations. This hands-on workshop will focus on communication strategies of mutual benefit negotiation and influence-building tactics nested in the gender culture in which women negotiate. From there, we will learn about women’s natural strengths—self-awareness, empathy, collaboration and flexibility—while also incorporating competitive tactics in a way that strengthens relationships and avoids gender conflicts.
