Protecting Our Democracy: Lessons from Tunisia and Egypt, A Panel Discussion

    5:30 PM – 7:00 PM

Some recent developments in the U.S. have had a familiar ring to them for those who have lived under authoritarian rule. Talk about rigged elections, foreign intervention, fake news, the deep state, gender rights, and coups are very much part of another world not normally associated with this country. This panel discussion will draw lessons in two ways. It seeks to inform U.S. policy towards the region and to inform communities in the U.S. reacting to changing orders here in the U.S. and abroad. We are delighted to have special guests Drs. Ezzedine Fishere from Egypt, now at Dartmouth, and Nadia Marzouki from Tunisia, now at the Harvard Kennedy School. The discussion will be moderated by Benjamin Naimark-Rowse from Fletcher with the participation of Fletcher faculty and students.

    Twitter Diplomacy

    4:30 PM – 5:30 PM

Twitter is leading a game-changing trend in digital diplomacy and global communications. Its open, real-time, 140-character platform is changing the way that policymakers communicate with civil society and accelerating diplomats’ ability to gather information and react to events. Twitter has been praised as a tool that will open the world to a global conversation and greater understanding. However, it has also been criticized as design that favors speed over analysis, aggression over reflection, and shock over depth. We welcome Colin Crowell, Vice President of Global Public Policy & Philanthropy at Twitter, to share his insights with the Fletcher School and Tufts community. This event will be hosted by Tisch College Dean Alan Solomont in ASEAN and is co-sponsored by the Tisch College of Civic Life. Reception to follow.
