Despite the triumphalism of an “Asian century”, the future of democracy and human rights in the region is much more uncertain. Southeast Asia will be a critical part of that story. Though the sub-region has made notable progress in this field, including the adoption of a historic human rights declaration last year, several troubling hotspots remain – including ethnic tensions in Burma, political disappearances in Laos, and rights abuses in southern Thailand. Dr. Rizal Sukma, executive director of one of Southeast Asia’s best think tanks and named one of the world’s top thinkers by Foreign Policy Magazine, will shed light on how to promote democracy and human rights in the region in a talk to the ASEAN Society on April 2.
