Description
In his presentation, Dr. Achim Wennmann will look at statebuilding as a political process though a negotiation. His analysis connects to the functional perspective on ‘the state’ with work on negotiation, political transitions, and governance in fragile states. The talk positions statebuilding within a transformation process that forges coalitions between different stakeholders, and fuses traditional, informal, and new state components into hybrid political orders. But what is the process behind such change? And, what is the role of negotiation? In order to address these questions, the presentation draws on a heterogeneous group of case examples including work on political transitions, negotiation of statehood, and crime conversion, as well as experience from Afghanistan, Central America, and Mexico.
