Living Arrangements and Amenities

Suites:

Layout of a typical Blakeley suite
(exact dimensions may vary slightly)

Residents live in suites composed of 2 – 3 small private bedrooms that open onto a larger common room. Thus each suite is typically occupied by 2 – 3 residents. Bedroom dimensions are approximately 7 x10 ft (2 x 3 m), while common room dimensions are approximately 14 x 15ft (4 x 4.5 m).

Furniture:

Each bedroom is furnished with a bed and mattress (long-twin size), a student desk and wooden chair, and a5-drawer dresser. Each suite’s common room is furnished with a coffee table and 2 – 3 lounge chairs. Students may bring in additional furniture, but only if it meets fire code requirements (rooms may be subject to unannounced inspections by the Tufts Fire Marshal throughout the year).

Communications:

Each suite has a free cable TV connection and a working phone line. Local phone service (encompassing the Boston metro area) is provided free of charge, and long-distance calls (including international calls) can be made using a pre-paid calling card. Residents in each

suite will need to provide their own phone. Each bedroom has an Ethernet connection that enables students to connect to the Tufts network for free internet access.

Bathrooms:

Bathrooms are located on each floor and are shared by 4 – 5 people of the same gender. Each bathroom has one shower, one toilet, and two sinks. The shower and toilet are each enclosed in stalls so that more than one person can use the bathroom at a time. Bathrooms are cleaned daily.

Kitchen and Meals:

Blakeley has one kitchen shared by all residents who choose to use it. The kitchen has 5 refrigerators, 2 stoves, 2 sinks, 2 microwaves, and cupboard space. The kitchen is scheduled to undergo an expansion in the summer of 2014. Residents are responsible for providing their own cookware and dishes and are also responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the kitchen.

All cooking must be done in the kitchen – no cooking is permitted in the suites. Residents are permitted to bring small dorm “cube” refrigerators. Residents may also choose to rent the Tufts Microfridge, which is a combination refrigerator/microwave designed for dorm use. It can be rented from Tufts Student Resources. This is the only type of microwave permitted in the suites. The presence of any other microwaves or other cooking appliances in suites will result in confiscation and a fine by the Tufts Fire Marshall.
