The Fletcher School

A Graduate School of International Affairs

2008-09 Student Profiles

Andrew Lewis, MALD 2010, United Kingdom and United States

Why I chose Fletcher: Fletcher appealed to me for three reasons: it is interdisciplinary, international, and intimate. The international conflict issues on which I would like to work require analysis across many disciplines. Global problems require global solutions, and Fletcher has an international outlook, student body, and network. Lastly, the issues require debate and discussion, bringing in diverse perspectives, and the School’s intimate class sizes foster rich dialogue.

On Fletcher’s international community: It may sound cliché, but everyone at Fletcher is truly unique. Every person I’ve met has an interesting story about something original that they have done, or an unusual place they have visited. People here have already challenged themselves to go out and start putting their vision for a better world into action, and have come here to refine that vision and take it to the next level. Every conversation is a learning experience. Learning about the situation in the Congo from someone who fought in wars there, or getting an Iranian person’s perspective on U.S. politics has broadened my perspective in ways that I didn’t anticipate.
