Why I chose Fletcher: I chose Fletcher for its interdisciplinary curriculum. From spending several years working as a lawyer and at an international justice research center, I knew that international law necessarily cuts across disciplines. At Fletcher I take law classes with non-lawyers, thereby gaining valuable insight into alternative perspectives on a whole host of issues. The diverse backgrounds and experiences of my classmates enrich my classes and force me, in a positive way, to think outside the law. The situation of an LL.M. program at Fletcher makes perfect sense, given the interdisciplinary nature of international law.
On the classroom experience: The law professors at Fletcher all have a valuable mix of practical and academic experience that enhances their lectures. Not only do we learn about the post-conflict situation in East Timor from our readings, but we get to hear about it first hand from our professor, who held a key role in the U.N. transitional authority there. In addition, the High Table luncheon series provides an opportunity for the LL.M. students to hear about their professors’ unique experiences, as well as those from practitioners outside Fletcher.
